Our Family
A Family Legacy of Care: Get to Know the Rolands
Warren B. Roland, son of the funeral home's founder, Burdette L. Roland, graduated with an associate degree in Mortuary Science from the University of Minnesota in 1966. He began to acquire a share of the business in the late 1960s. In 1971, Warren married hometown beautician Amy Jo Paul at The Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa.
Warren and Amy were blessed with six children. As advocates, the Roland family actively pioneered the revival of home education in Iowa. Working in cooperation with Iowa law and the Atlantic Community School District, they homeschooled their children from the time the eldest was eleven. They cherished the ability to educate their children according to their individual interests while also taking part in public school activities. With what they considered "the best of both worlds," the Rolands consistently maintained a strong friendship with and support for the Atlantic Public Schools.
Their children have since graduated and pursued various college degrees and careers, at one point living on four different continents simultaneously. Today, they are all enjoying growing families of their own.
Warren passed away on February 16, 2023. Amy Jo, who has been helping clients and the community with their grief since 2003, continues as a co-owner of the funeral home. Other family members currently serving the business include their daughter, Heidi (Roland) Hinman, who is a co-owner and manager overseeing pre-planning, funeral assistance, and grief support. She is joined by her husband and son-in-law, Larry Hinman, a full-time licensed funeral director, and their son-in-law, Ian Barrs, who serves as an assistant and media specialist.
