Mitch Thompson, 61, of Atlantic, Iowa, passed away peacefully on May 5, 2026, at Atlantic Specialty Care after courageously fighting a long and difficult battle with cancer for many years.
Mitchell Lee was born on September 11, 1964, in Audubon, Iowa, the son of Lee and JoAnn (Markley) Thompson. Mitch attended Exira High School and participated in football and track, setting a few records along the way. Those that knew Mitch knew he carried both determination and a strong spirit throughout his life.
Mitch was employed for many years with various construction companies until a major back surgery left him unable to work.
Above all else, Mitch was a proud Pa-Pa to his grandson, Brecken Lee. It was nearly impossible to have a conversation with him without hearing about Brecken, who brought him endless joy and pride.
Mitch loved the outdoors and was a lifelong “rocker,” attending countless concerts throughout his life. He had a gift of storytelling and could always bring laughter into a room with the stories he loved to share.
Mitch leaves behind many memories that will continue to live on through those who knew and loved him which include his son, Cole Jacob “CJ” Benton of Hamlin; grandson, Brecken Lee Benton of Templeton; siblings, Kim (Carol Wright) Thompson, Christi (Todd) Knutsen, and Leah (Mitch) Mundorf, all of Atlantic; several nieces, nephews, and other relatives; and many friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Lee and JoAnn Thompson; brother, Mike Thompson; sister-in-law, Yvonne Thompson; and nephews, Chad Thompson and Brian Wright.
A Celebration of Life visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m., Friday, May 22nd at Roland Funeral Home in Atlantic followed by a prayer service and time to share memories from 11:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Interment will follow at the Oakfield Cemetery, east of Brayton.
Following the interment, family and friends are invited to a luncheon and time of fellowship at Skip’s Celebration Space, 1000 East 7th, Atlantic.
