Lorraine Vogl

Lorraine Vogl, 90, of Atlantic, Iowa, passed away Thursday, July 23, 2026, surrounded by her children at Cass Health in Atlantic.

Lorraine Josephine Steffes was born on May 25, 1936, in Roselle, Iowa, one of ten born to John Andrew and Anna Mary (Halbur) Steffes. She attended Holy Angels Catholic School in Roselle. As a teenager she worked as a caregiver and cook for several large families, and one of those family’s had three children who had lost their mother at a young age. She cared for these children until her marriage to Joseph John Vogl on February 15, 1955, in Holy Angels Catholic Church at Roselle.

The couple made their home west of Gray, Iowa and after Joe’s time in the United States Army they moved south of Manning. In 1967, they moved to farms in the Atlantic and Cumberland areas. Lorraine worked alongside Joe farming, raising livestock, milking cows, and supporting kids in their 4-H projects. Her children will always remember the tied blankets she made special for each of them.

In 1983, Lorraine began working in the kitchen at Cass County Memorial Hospital. She was well known for her delicious desserts and breakfast food. While there, she encouraged several of her children to join her, having at least 6 of her children or their spouses working at CCMH at some point during her career. Working outside the home came with a price though… they had to get a microwave! Lorraine worked there 18 years, retiring in 2001.

In retirement, Joe and Lorraine kept busy maintaining their rental houses, often doing much of the remodeling on their own to save money so they could start traveling. They took many trips through the years, and especially enjoyed cruises and traveling along the West Coast. A few highlights of their adventures were deep sea fishing, sightseeing from a submarine, taking a sky lift down to the beach and white-water rafting in Colorado.

Lorraine was a member of SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church.

Lorraine is survived by her children, Larry Vogl, Dennis (Kathy) Vogl, Sharon (Steve) Paul, Kenneth (Mardell) Vogl, Barbara Vogl, Linda (Kent) Schmitt, Charles Vogl, and Diane (Marve) Eblen; 20 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; Lorraine’s siblings, Roman Steffes, Norma Gosch, Robert (Rache) Steffes, Arlene (Melvin) Meier, Marian Pickhinke, and Carol (Don) Mader; Joe’s siblings, John (Adella) Vogl, Dorothy Danner, Mary Ann Kasperbauer, and Levan Eich; and several nieces and nephews. Helping celebrate Lorraine’s heavenly journey home was MaryLou Kirsch, lifelong best friend, who was always there for her, even in her last days.

She is preceded in death by the love of her life, Joseph John Vogl; her parents, John and Anna Mary Steffes; Lorraine’s siblings, Sister Marcella Steffes, Doris (Frank) Mader and LaVerne (Barbara) Steffes; Lorraine’s sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Arlene Steffes and Fred Gosch; parents-in-law, John and Elizabeth Vogl; Joe’s siblings, Betty (Leo) Danner, Earl (Laurel) Vogl and LeRoy (Barbara) Vogl; and Joe’s brothers-in-law, Pete Danner, Norbert Kasperbauer, and Mike Eich.

Visitation with the family present will begin at 4:00 p.m., Sunday, July 26th at Roland Funeral Home in Atlantic. The visitation will conclude with a Rosary service at 5:45 p.m.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, July 27th at SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Atlantic. Burial will be in the SS Peter and Paul Catholic Cemetery.

Memorials are preferred to the family for later designation to organizations close to Joe and Lorraine’s hearts.
