Listen to Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Jon Humphrey at his home on April 29 surrounded by his loved ones.

Jon was born December 19, 1959 in Atlantic Iowa to Barbara (Haynes) Humphrey and Dr. James Humphrey. The second of four children, Jon was an energetic (which some would characterize as ornery) child who channeled his enthusiasm into terrorizing the town with the neighborhood kids and excelling at athletics. The clear favorite of his aunts and grandmother Jon was the golden child who could do no wrong (at least if his sister JoBeth is to be believed). After high school, Jon graduated from DMACC where he learned the skills that he would later employ as a handyman and general contractor.

Upon returning to Atlantic, Jon married his first wife and high school sweetheart Jocelyn (Rhodes) Balch and the couple later welcomed their (favorite) son Jason. In 1991 Jon married Cindy Steffens after a whirlwind courtship. To this new marriage, Cindy brought her two children Chad and Nicole. Together Jon and Cindy created a new family, in which the children regarded themselves as true siblings as opposed to step-kids.

Jon was a skilled and successful carpenter, owning Humphrey Construction before finding his true passion in his work life which was the golf course. Jon was an artist of the greens and fairways, beautifying the course with countless hours spent doting on his vision. There was no greater sense of pride than to see his vision come to life and for others to enjoy it. Those who knew Jon loved his dry and witty sense of humor, his passion for music, and avid fandom for the Hawkeyes and Green Bay Packers. As he got older Jon became a true treasure hunter, finding rare, weird, and generally cool things from the most random places. These treasures were often given to his children and grandchildren with little to no explanation. Jon loved watching his grandchildren grow and supporting them in all of their activities, and would occasionally slip them undisclosed sums of money with the instruction to not tell their parents. Of all his roles, Jon loved being Papa to Makynzie, Ethan, Lily, and Lucy the most.

Jon is survived by his partner Cindy Humphrey; his children Jason, Nicole, and Chad (Lori); grandchildren Makynzie, Ethan, Lily, and Lucy; his sister JoBeth (Jack) Jensen and their children Lindsey, Andrew, and Jackie; his niece Heather Martinez as well as countless other loved ones and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents Barb and Jim and his brothers Jim and Jay Humphrey.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Natasha and the team from Hospice of the Midwest for their compassionate care of Jon and his loved ones.
