Jim Comes

James “Jim” Comes, age 78, of Atlantic, Iowa, passed away peacefully at his home Saturday, May 16, 2026, surrounded by his wife and children.

Born on May 25, 1947, Jim was the son of Roy and Hazel (Trainer) Comes. Jim was raised and lived near Atlantic, Iowa, on the family farm, where he later graduated from Atlantic High School in 1965. Following graduation, Jim attended Northwest Missouri State University, where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture Business in 1969. Jim was in the Army National Guard for six years and received an Honorable Discharge.

Jim met the love of his life, Connie Reynolds of Lenox, Iowa, at a hog roast he hosted at his parents’ farm in 1971. They married in 1972 and raised their four children, Chad, Drew, Daniel and Elizabeth. Carrying on the love of farming and livestock he learned from his father, he farmed his whole life and continued to mentor his children and grandchildren and support their love of agriculture long after retirement. Jim took immense pride in seeing his children and grandchildren carry on the family legacy with the same dedication and work ethic he helped instill in them.

Jim was a loving grandfather who cherished every moment spent with his 12 grandchildren. He often said his greatest pride was his children and grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Connie Comes, sons Chad Comes of Atlantic; Drew Comes and wife Kim of Atlantic; Daniel Comes and wife Jenna of Mapleton, and daughter Elizabeth Babcock and husband Abram of Broken Bow, Nebraska; 12 grandchildren Tyler Comes, Dylan Comes, Lola Comes, Lauren Comes, Claire Comes, Regan Babcock, Miles Babcock, Morgan Comes, Brooke Comes, Barrett Babcock, Millie Comes, and Anna Comes; brother Gary (Doris) Comes of Atlantic; nephew Craig and niece Janine Comes and many extended family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Hazel Comes and brother Donald Comes.

To celebrate Jim’s life, relatives and friends are welcome to stop and visit between the hours of 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m., Thursday, May 28th at Bluebird Hill.

Memorials may be directed to the Jim Comes Family. They will be designated in his name at a later date.
