Carl Eldon Shaffer, 53, of Griswold, Iowa, died Tuesday, February 24, 2026, at his home. He was born in Denver, Colorado on June 20, 1972, and was named after his paternal uncle, Carl Albert Shaffer and maternal great-uncle, William Eldon McGonagill.

Carl served in the United States Army and was stationed initially in South Korea and later at Fort Benning receiving several marksmanship badges. He was on the National Intercollegiate Meats Judging Championship team during college. His heart was forever tied to the ranch in Wyoming that his great-grandfather and grandfather homesteaded.

Carl is survived by his mother, Kay Shaffer of Anton, Texas; a younger sister, Marita Shaffer also of Anton; an older brother, Larry Shaffer and his wife, Jacklyn of Mtn Grove, Missouri; an older sister, Jody McCloud and her husband, Gayle of Trenton, Missouri; four nephews, Blake, Luke, Levi and Brice; two nieces, Nichole and Katelyn; great-nephews, Andrew, Hunter, Owen, Boon and Ben; and great-nieces, Charlie, Lainey, Rylee, Maggie, Heidi and Anna. He was preceded in death by a nephew, Bradley Hill.

Services are planned at a later date in Wyoming.
