Forrest Winston

Forrest E. “Forrie” Winston, 78, of rural Atlantic passed away Thursday, May 8, at home on his family farm where he was born.

Forrest Edwin Winston was born February 13, 1930 to James and Thelma (Potter) Winston. He was raised west of Atlantic on the family farm and attended country school. He graduated with the Atlantic High School Class of 1948. He helped his father on the farm until joining the Marine Corp in 1951. He served in the Korean conflict.

After returning from Korea, he farmed with his father and on July 10, 1954 Forrest was united in marriage to Shirley Behnken of Anita at Zion Lutheran Church in Atlantic. Forrest and Shirley moved to the family farm in 1955 and raised a family where they spent the rest of their 54 years of married life together.

He farmed his land, owned and operated the Wiota Elevator, was a rural postal carrier and was an ASCS employee. He was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church, Lions Club, Cass County Extension Council, Cattleman’s Association and was a Township Trustee.

Forrie’s interests and hobbies included, wood refinishing and yard work, and he had a great love for his farm work. He and Shirley enjoyed boating and traveling together. His family will remember him as a “family man.” He loved being with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He will be remembered by several nieces, nephews, cousins, other family members and friends.

He is presently survived by his wife, Shirley; his three children Wynn Winston of Atlantic, Jeff and wife Sharon Winston of Atlantic and Julie Messer and husband Richard of Elkhorn, Nebraska; grandchildren Jared and wife Lorelei Winston of Pflugerville, Texas, Jeanna and husband Craig Griffin and children Carter and Kira of Atlantic, Justin and wife Christy Winston and son Jackson of Lewis, Michael Winston of Atlantic and Nathan Messer, Cara Messer of Elkhorn, Nebraska; his mother-in-law Beulah B. Behnken of Atlantic; brother-in-law Larry D. Behnken of Osage Beach, Missouri; and sisters-in-law, Betty Winston of Atlantic and Deb Winston of Austin, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Thelma; brothers, Allen Winston and Kenneth Winston; his sister Phyllis and husband Leo Sorensen; and father-in-law Claus A. Behnken.

Funeral Information

The funeral service will be held at 3:00 P.M. on Saturday, May 10 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Atlantic. Pastor Ken Davidson will officiate. Friends are welcome to join the family for the interment service, which will be held prior to the funeral service, in the Atlantic Cemetery at 2:00 P.M. There will be a military service presented by the Atlantic Color Guard. The family will meet relatives and friends for a visitation on Friday evening, May 9, from 6:00 to 7:30. There will be open visitation throughout the week also.
